Kingspoint Crier: July 2024
Letter from the KP Presidents
Dear Kingspoint Club Members,
As July comes to a close, let us celebrate all our amazing Kingspoint swimmers who are going to the champs meet on August 3rd! We wish them luck! Swim team practices for this final meet have shifted to morning only and the last practice will be on Friday, August 2nd. We encourage our members and summer pass holders to come and enjoy our wonderful pool, especially in those cooler evening hours before summer slips away!
If you happened to pass by the pool between July 18th and July 19th, you would have noticed a very large tree that lay across the parking lot and that disappeared the next day. A huge thank you to Club and “Chainsaw Gang” members Jim Gravgaard, Karl Kroenlein, Ben Galke, Dave Parrish, Chris Tucker, and John Williams. Also, the Club is grateful to Matt Blinn for donating and installing some extra wood planks to help fill in some gaps on the Kingspoint Club dock!
Upcoming Pool Schedule and Pool/Creek Related News:
June 15 - August 29 Pool Hours:
Mon - Fri: 11:00 - 8 p.m.**
(Aug. 26-29) 3:00 - 8 p.m.

August 30th to September 2nd:
Fri - Mon: 11:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Lifeguard and Pool Attendant Hours: Just a reminder that due to budget constraints over the past few years, the Club has been utilizing a combination of lifeguarded hours and swim-at-your-own-risk hours. The swim-at-your-own-risk hours are monitored by pool attendants who will be managed by the Pool Attendant Manager, Lexi Stanhope.
Please Note: From now until the end of the 2024 Pool Season.
Lifeguards will be on duty from 4 to 6 PM on weekdays
Lifeguards will be on duty from 12:30 to 8 PM on weekends/holidays.
Pool attendants will fill all other open pool hours.
Pool Attendants will manage the pool during the swim-at-your-own-risk hours: They will work during non-guarded times when the pool is open without a lifeguard on duty, when children (under 14) will need to be supervised by a responsible adult/guardian over the age of 18.
When lifeguards are on duty, non-swimming children & children under 12 years old must be accompanied by an adult (18+) swimmer at all times.
We humbly ask that our members and summer pass holders be patient and understanding with the operations of the KP Pool as we have been navigating scheduling and last minute changes with our lifeguards and pool attendants.
Now Thru August 19 Water Aerobics: The Club has a new water aerobics instructor this year. Joan Feldman, a fellow Kingspoint resident, will teach water aerobics on Mondays and Fridays from 10:00-11:00 a.m., before the pool opens to swimmers.

Kingspoint Neighborhood Association July News
We hope that you and your family are having a great summer, enjoying the many pleasures our community offers, and are making good memories together. The strength of our community rests in our relationships with our neighbors. We have a strong spirit of community involvement and volunteerism. There are many ways for neighbors of all ages to get involved and help keep our community beautiful, vibrant, and engaged.
With children home for summer break and the pool open, we are all more mindful when driving around the community. We have more walkers and bikers than any other time of year. We appreciate walkers who remember to walk facing oncoming traffic, and who allow space for cars to pass them and their pets safely.
For several years now, we have had an informal ‘chainsaw gang’ of neighbors willing to help out when a large limb or small tree falls during a storm blocking a driveway or neighborhood street. We don’t need this sort of community effort very often, but it is certainly appreciated when the unexpected happens. VDoT is responsible for clearing downed limbs from streets, but they can’t always get out to re-open neighborhood streets right away. Neighbors have worked together to keep main streets open so folks can get to their homes.
A neighbor contacted me this week to ask for help with a limb, which had fallen into his street, while he and his family were on vacation. I dusted off our list of ‘Chainsaw Gang’ volunteers and realized that many of these neighbors have recently moved or passed away. We need a few more volunteers willing to help out in an emergency. If you have a chainsaw or a wheelbarrow and rake and are willing to help a neighbor in need, please contact me to add your name to our list. And if you see a branch or tree blocking a street or a neighbor’s driveway, please don’t wait for an invitation to help. If you have the tools and the ability to pitch in to clean up the mess, so cars can pass, then please do. Just make sure to wear what you need to keep yourself safe as you work.
As a reminder, you will need to schedule and pay for a bulk trash pick-up if you need county staff to clear away broken limbs or other yard waste. Even after a major storm, the county will only pick up yard debris free of charge if a Federal Disaster has been declared and they receive federal money to pay for clean-up.
In fact, charges for curbside recycling are going up with the August bill from $7.00/month to $10.50/month, or $126.00 per year. Since there are only two pick-up dates most months for a total of 26 pick-ups each year, the charge each time your recycling cart is emptied has now gone up to around $4.85 per visit. Under the current county administration, this once free service has become a ‘self-funded’ program, despite the recent huge increase in real-estate assessments which will result in much higher county taxes for homeowners going forwards. Find answers to your questions about your recycling service, or file a request to start or stop service here. You can still drop off recyclables at county ‘Convenience Centers.’ The next (free) VPPSA Household Chemical Collection will be August 10 at Warhill High School from 8:00 AM-Noon.
VDoT and JCSA have both worked to improve drainage and alleviate flooding in our community this year. We realize that a few areas still have standing water after very heavy rains. Many of the areas now flooding were dug up in August of 2022 when Dominion Energy laid their new lines. When those excavations were covered, they no longer drained as they did previously. Due to our underground utilities, they have done as much as they can do because the utility lines (electricity, cable, phone, gas, water, and sewer) are relatively close to the surface. Please be careful and watch for standing water on stormy days.
Long-time neighbor Lois Fiske, and her son Jeffrey, moved out of their Kingspoint home earlier this month to move closer to their extended family. Lois was an active and dedicated member of the Kingspoint Garden Club and the Kingspoint Women’s Club for many decades. She and her late husband, George, moved to Kingspoint in 1990. We will certainly miss Lois and Jeffrey, who lived on Southpoint Drive.
Our community is continually revitalized as new neighbors join us.
Tyson and Jennifer Walsh are settling into their new home on Wakerobin Road with their 9 year old son, Edgar and their 5 year old daughter, Eleanor. They have three dogs that you will see around the neighborhood enjoying long walks. George and Elijah are year old pups, and Argus is getting on in years.
Ted and Beatriz "Bea" Huptich moved into their new home on Glenwood Drive in May. They are longtime residents of Williamsburg with roots in the Queens Lake area. They have returned to the area from Northern Virginia due to federal employment relocation. They have moved here with their children and look forward to connecting with the neighborhood.
Jeff and Julie Mishler moved into their new home on Archer’s Hope Drive in early July. We look forward to introducing them in more detail very soon.
If you are new to the community, or have a new family living near you, please let us know at kpwebmisstress@gmail.com so we can visit with a copy of the Kingspoint Directory and include them in the 2025 listings. And please contact KPNA Secretary Kenita Hill at secretarykpna@gmail.com to make sure you are listed in the neighborhood directory, and with any changes or updates to your listing.
As you know, conversations have been ongoing for some months now about the possibility of the City of Williamsburg and our county separating the schools into two separate divisions. The JCC Board of Supervisors commissioned a study last September to determine what would be involved in operating the schools separately from the City, if the decision to separate is taken when the current contract is up. That report is available for review in the agenda packet for the June 25, 2024 meeting. Video from the meeting is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kFT0bG6dk0." There are actually two documents to download from the Agenda Packet, which you will find in the sidebar at the link above. The documents relating to the feasibility study are about 3/4 of the way down the list in the sidebar.
Work on the Colonial Parkway continues. We don’t expect to have access to the portion of the Parkway between Kingspoint and Williamsburg again until mid-2026, assuming the work stays on schedule. If you have driven over near the Law School to where you can look down on the Parkway you will see that the road has been ripped up in preparation for improvements to drainage and a newly poured road. Find more information on The Colonial Parkway Rehabilitation website, which contains important project news and information regarding closures, detours, and other impacts.
Many thanks to all of our dedicated front entrance volunteers for their work. David Miller is coordinating our efforts to keep the neighborhood entrance well-maintained. Chris Bonday is continuing his ongoing efforts to keep the grass neatly trimmed and trash removed. If you are willing to join our crew of volunteers to help with maintenance chores at the entrance, please get in touch with David Miller.
We appreciate everyone who has already given Treasurer Karen Schneider your 2024 membership dues for the neighborhood association. Your voluntary support keeping our neighborhood vibrant, beautiful, and connected. You will find complete details and a membership form in the first few pages of your 2024 Kingspoint Directory.
Contact us at kpwebmistress@gmail.com to add your email to our distribution list, to change your email, or to have your email address removed so you no longer receive community updates.
